Summer Over ?

Aaaaah yes now we have a break from live in visitors until further notice. I thought I would really be be no good at that sort of thing, but it really has been ok. The Museumsufer fest is now over as well, along with the summer unfortunately. There are always a few things I always look such as the RadioX place, which is a radio station I have been listening to for a very long time here in Frankfurt, and one or too other artists stands.

Few pressures going on at the moment , not sure how it will all pan out in the end, I can't complain though, still some changes are sure to come wether I want them or not !

At least I have my good bike working now, and my formal physio stops after tomorrow, then I have control of the exercise routine, the too little that I already do not do.

I can't help myself poking at the land I am formally another citizen of, but these films are a selection of public information films which are worth a look from Britain. I definitely should have been an actor in those.

Finally this, at least for me, is a rather disturbing article and film about the mass productions of chickens and eggs. I am not a vegetarion, or a vegan ...yet....but when you watch the film it really makes you think twice about how animals are treated before their prodcuts get to your plate .....Article is here and film is here. And sadly my 'little break' has now come to an end, so I must return to work. Still it was good and I had a very pleasant birthday as well. And of course the very good news is I still have some weeks holidays still left to burn. Despite some time roaming the interwebs, I did not really find anything that I thought was particularly awe inspiring. Oh well I will just have to keep on trying...

Always strange stuff coming out of the UK like this about a survey where people think their major organs are located. Perhaps a more ominous one is this one about getting prosecuted for not providing encryption keys.

Aaaahhh...at least the source of the earth's hum has finally been identified, or has it ?...........seems like everything is humming these days including sand dunes, well I think they have been doing that for a very long time indeed...

Relax Relax Relax.......my turn now, or at least trying to. I am having loads of fun with music software and my new controller from Behringer. The hours sure fly by when sitting in front of a computer with that stuff. In any case the rule for the next few days is at least one swim a day, and a reduction of beer intake, both rather more of a challenge than I thought. Still the sun is out, it's warm, German beer is cold and excellent and therefore I certainly can't complain...

Unlike the UK, not only has Big Brother truly come home to roost, but it seems the dodgy finances just keep appearing , here , here and here. There is plenty more where that came from and I am sure more is coming , but UK is not the only place with problems of course. Here in Germany there are some not entirely unrelated.... arsonists, at least in Berlin.
On a more positive note these guys want you steal their ideas !

Stormy times indeed, lots to think about, brought about by circumstances well beyond my control. Holiday times upon us but it taints the summer happy time. Oh well, as ever, it could be much much worse. Think I will walk over to then climb up the Gotheturm in a minute for a view and at least some exercise. Watched Brüno yesterday, totally outrageous, but it had me crying with laughter in minutes. If you are open minded and not easily offended go and see it. Sacha Baron Cohen is amazing.

Am continuing to discover some of the less well lone eating and drinking holes here in sunny Sachsenhausen, not doing my stomach profile much good though.

Hot Spring

Hot Hot Hot, 32.5 degrees C outside on my main balcony, it is the 10th April and Spring has definitely finally arrived in Frankfurt. I am trying to be a good boy and cut back a bit on my beer intake, but oh, well you see, the sun, the warmth, the sound of the birds the blossom etc etc I can't resist. You only live once , or do you ?

But on a more serious note a couple of guys I know have suddenly become seriously ill, one is younger than me, it has reminded me that you really have to enjoy what you have while you can, and savor your friends and family.

So right now as I write this I am looking at the spring sun streaming in and the woods stretching out in front of towards the airport in the distance, and listening to some weird but relaxing stuff on the realthings space. Internet Radio is excellent and long may it live.

What about Twitter ? Yes I have finally given in, I even have two accounts, but it is really a good way to keep in touch almost real time, especially if you are lucky enough to have a mobile phone connected to the internet, and your friends and family are in other countries. This is also weird and occasionally a bit disturbing. So anyway don't knock it until you have given it a try !

This weekend, as I am alone, I am going to eat out as much as I can, I can't be bothered to cook for myself, and luckily here in Germany one can have some serious nosh for next to nothing. What a lazy git I am.

So life is not all bad is it ? Summer coming, no big trips planned, but who needs them if the weather is like this ( I talk about the weather a lot right ?)

So even if it does not get realised, I believe that Jaque Fresco is a wonderful guy, he is one of my heroes, if only it would all come true, check out The Venus Project.

Ghastly weather, had a busy week and a have another busy one coming up. Not much to say apart from that. I will attend a Chamber Music evening on Wednesday, and am learning to play more guitar music by Rage .........yes my tastes are very broad. Can't wait until the spring, will then get myself down to Switzerland for some walking .

Now then, is this guy serious ? Surely there are one or two other 'priority' issues, but people definitely need to clear up their pet mess !!!

Busy weekend with lots of chores. New shopping centre in Frankfurt finally opened, horribly busy but some new shops and a very interesting building with kind of glass tubes concept. Started swimming again, enjoyed it but the trick is to keep it up during the week...

Started to pick up my guitar again as well.....rusty but practice practice practice.

According to British Police Summer may not be a good time to visit the UK according to this article. Looks like you will be spied on from the air as well if you do. I am not targeting UK just keep seeing articles like this.

One Week Ill, One Week Vacation , Work Again Tomorrow

I just came back from a trip to the UK, always interesting visiting my home country from time to time. Stayed on the north Kent coast at a place called Herne Bay. It is certainly warmer over there than it it is here back in Fft.

I noticed evidence of hard economic times more in UK than in Germany, at least for now, talking of which this is an interesting article I saw on Reuters about the German property market.

Not wanting to sound too sexist but both pilots flying my plane home were ladies, they did a fine job, ultra smooth flight and I was home ahead of schedule, thank you Lufthansa.

Could never understand Twitter(everyone says that at the start)...but now I can't stop it is really addictive. Perhaps interesting is following celebrities,, make sure they are the real ones though!

Well well well, now that was along time since the last one was it not ? Sorry about that...what on earth have I been up to then ? Good question, apart from a trip to Thailand , and a trip to the UK at Christmas, and otherwise not much apart from work.

My oh my what interesting and strange times we are living in. There is so much going on with the virtual melt down of the financial system and all, so let's try and keep off that topic......whatever happens I am definitely going to retire to a warm climate. Will be visiting the UK again for a week in a couple of weeks, and will make the most out of the exchange rates as they long as they last. I have not spent nearly enough time looking at the internet, something I need to put right pronto.

Thailand interesting but the hotel was a disappointment, the tan has gone now :-((( The journey was a disaster both ways, a broken aircraft on the way out that had to be switched ,and lots of delay and a diversion on the way home (oh and no luggage). Thankfully I do not have to travel by air that frequently.

Bali....loved it loved it loved it loved and Singapore toooooooooooooooooo !

But that is all long past for now............ Dim cold winter here we go. Strange thing about Bali and indeed Singapore, it gets dark early and stays really dark for the whole night, hardly any twilight, just suddenly dark or light with nothing in between.

Sadly lots of poverty and you need a lot of 'spare cash' to donate. In general people were fabulous, the version of Hindu religion there is amazing.....could write lots about the whole trip....but I do not have time now.

Aaaaahhhhh yes , the clock is running nicely and the holiday is getting ever closer :-)
Went for breakfast yesterday at my favourite breakfast venue.......while in the loo was surprised to find the urinal chock a block with ice, in fact they all were. Seems this is a new novelty for the gents , not as fun as to as those little footballs and goals though........seems thy are getting a bit ahem, forward with the vending machines as well !!!

Oh well it is still a great place........

Had a round of visitors, so have been doing the local sites again. It has been fun and the weather has been excellent, although weirdly humid and hot. Am really looking forward to holiday in July ....off to the jungles for some more steam :-)

Hello, today is the Rund um den Henninger-Turm bicycle race, and I am thankfully not at work. The start and finish are right outside my flat, so the place is all locked down for about twenty four hours. It never ceases to amaze me how the logistics of this event seem to never prevent it going off without a hitch every time. People here in Germany are excellent at organising these types of things. Sadly the brewery that is the main sponsor may not be any more after this race. As I write this the race is still going on with the riders expected back in Frankfurt shortly, for the last laps round the brewery and then the finish.

As far as I am concerned it is still not spring, although have managed one lunch session on the balcony so far. I have been in Eppstein this morning, another one of those places not far away but interesting. After a coffee in a small hotel climbed the tower at the medieval castle. Once again lots of curious places, but just have not got round to looking yet. Eppstein looks like it could be good in the summer.

Still not spending enough time scouring the internet for good stuff...must fix that......

I have always really enjoyed walking, especially in the Alps , but only in summer mind. But you would not get me to attempt the El Caminto del Rey, although it is tempting. This old walkway has fallen into disrepair, but certainly gets the adrenalin pumping. You must watch this video to get the flavour !!

Remember that Biometrics are not what they seem in this digital age, your fingerprints could have been lifted as well already !

Ever wondered about all that time you could spend constructively with Google Map stuff, or how many nuclear explosions there have been since 1945 ?.....scary .

Nice bit of Spring starting at last, went for a walk along the Main at Aschaffenberg yesterday evening. Keep on discovering places right on the doorstep that I have not really explored in years.

Just started to play around ( I am a complete beginner) with making HDR pictures, is tricky but had some 'interesting'results already. They are pretty poor still so will keep them to myself for now.

One of my colleagues got caught up at the new terminal 5 during the week, what a disaster, this post on Boing Boing refers.

Of course unseasonally warm her in FFT as it is in many places that should be cold this time of year. Holiday period seems long ago now and I am firmly back in the 'normal' rhythm. Can't wait for it to start getting lighter again. Apart from being lucky enough to have a roof over my head, food to put in my belly and a job, I also have a telescope which bought from the US some years ago. I have been rather lazy in using it until lately. There were a couple of really clear nights recently and despite the cold I managed to spend some time looking at the sky. I live in a sea of light pollution , it must be fantastic to be somewhere really dark, but I do not think there are many places left..see more info here.

Oh well more censhorship and scarey government powers in the UK here.

And on a very different note, vibrators to be precise (this is rather graphic be warned), we can be thankful for other progress eh ?

Beautifully warm, just went for a walk down by the river, think I got a touch of sun. Had to go to London for a trip last week , was interesting as I have not been there for almost a year, prices are really scary though. I stayed at St.Martin's Lane , which was interesting, sadly only for two nights. Nevermind think I have to go again in April ..........But whatever you do get an Oyster card for the Tube otherwise it is horrendously expensive, I have learnt my lesson. Strange , I felt like a foreigner in my own country. Need to get all my links that I have ever mentioned sorted in a navigable list, will try to do that. Want to learn UNIX ? Talking of London / UK read this. Interesting here if you are a Mac user.

Well dog walking duty on full steam ahead at the moment as a neighbour is recovering from a hip replacement. I like having the pleasure of doing the walk then handing the happy creature back to the owner who bears the heavy burden of all of those other dog owning responsibilities. It's bad enough keeping a few fish.

So in many places the tram tracks are seamlessly embedded in the road. In some places though the tram tracks have their own space, off the road like a regular railway track. So I do not know what this person was doing when I went to catch my regular tram home this week. Sorry about the quality.

Top needed occupations needed for the next fifty years, time to get planning. Check this article, a sobering read. Waiting for the winter to go already. Managed to take the day off today . So the Christmas market is well underway. Force myself to go at least once a year, although I have to say it is a good place to do the some of the Christmas shopping...and slug of the Gluh Wein....no I have not bought a single thing yet, probably will leave it to the last minute, I think one is more creative when under pressure

Been off all week, with some bug, but back on the go now. Found some interesting old English documentaries on Google Video by sticking in a variety of searches, quite surprised they were there. Get a hint from this site which I believe I have mentioned before. Just started a very big book by Robert Fisk called 'The Great War For Civilisation'. He is an outstanding journalist and I recommend the book, it is a challenging read, but it is definitely one of those books that everybody should read. He has a website here. Have hardly been eating at all this week, but my goodness I am amazed how quickly the weight comes off !!! Perhaps I should keep it up.

Found this very sad and sobering diary yesterday here, about John's battle with cancer.

On a lighter note want to try sailing ? And on a an even lighter note I could not believe this when I saw it, oh well as they say it takes all sorts......This is weird , it is called Breathing Earth, go and look !

What I love about the country I live in is that just about everything for communal use is really done well and properly(as are most things here, unlike in some other countries ;-)). Up early in the morning tomorrow and off to the mountains again in Switzerland, have to get a bit of walking in (and Swiss cooking) before the summer dies out completely, despite the dodgy knee. It's excellent from Frankfurt, just hop on an ICE train and you can be in Interlaken in just four hours or so. So despite the large numbers of tourists, there are still some very quiet, beautiful and peaceful places to spend time in the Alps.......you do not expect me to tell you where though do you ?

For whatever reason walked to the airport yesterday from the flat, not far but took over three hours, was amazed how many folk hang around the perimeter at the end of the runways with bins and cameras...oh well. Saw a load of dead frogs in the woods ...weird.

I just had a wonderful birthday, and got all the things that I asked for..excellent. Was about to get into bed last night and somehow have twisted my knee in some very strange way, now I can hardly walk....oh well. A bit of a shame really 'coz I want to go walking in the mountains. I am trying to learn the guitar, it is much harder than I had predicted, but will hack on, luckily I have a dedicated personal tutor.

If you live in continental europe, there is a fair chance that you have had had to put up with a more or less continuous stream of car hooting. This seems to be the accepted way, particularly here, of showing your appreciation of a particular football team. Well to be frank I really do not really want to hear more of that, especially in the small hours. From that perspective I am glad it is nearly all over. Not being a football person myself at all, I have to say the atmosphere has been electric and everyone, in Germany at least , has been sucked in one way or another.

So after tonight, it's once more time to put on the helmet and pick up the sword again and crack on with the rest of life.....

But before we do, have a look at this , it is really weird, make sure you follow the instructions to the letter and do the stuff in your head only. ....oh and one more thing, be careful where you poop !

Left my shoulder bag with wallet and video camera at a restaurant last night, what a fool. Thankfully honesty prevails here still, all there and intact and now back in my posession,near heart attack though. I keep doing stuff like that lately, must be age.

Seems the town is taking the inevitable football fever very seriously. There is at least one enormous pontoon in the river which I presume is going to hold some sort of giant tv screen. What this will do for the moderate barge traffic on the Main I do not know. Apparently there will be a huge swathe of people descending on Frankfurt in the near future, most of whom do not have anay tickets for the games that are going to be played here, mmmm could be interesting.

On the boring front I have been getting a bit frustrated with the latest version of Firefox and have encountered some irritating bugs when trying to play embedded media, all this started when I loaded the Mac OS X version of Windows Media Player on my Powerbook, so (sorry if you are not a mac user) I have started to use Camino. Well at least for me it seems to be noticeably faster on my machine and connection, and all embedded media I have encountered so far seems to work fine. Don't get me wrong I will still keep using Firefox for some browsing , but for now Camino is the main one, visit the site here.

Today I am being a good boy and am doing some washing and ironing as the weather is rather crap.

Been a bad few days, more problems with teeth, I really had forgotten what toothache is all about. It makes one think how people manage who have to live with pain all the time. Any way (hopefully all the nerve taken out now, will be checked again next week) but as a result I am not relaxing in the mountains in Switzerland where I should be. Oh well should count myself lucky that it is only a bloody tooth !

Picture was taken near the old Market Hall in Frankfurt just next to the site of the new European Central Bank Buildings. Now I am sure the 'Investment' going into that little project could be used for some other purposes.........Listen to Karmabanque radio for an alternative view in general.

The weather here today is totally awful, storms , driving wind and buckets of water. I need to get one of those little weather thingies to put up on this page. Oh well, luckily it has been a successful day in lots of other ways though. I ate too much this week, (eat too much all the time) but here is a poor picture of one of the lunchtime offerings I had ........yuk..guess the creature and more tricky which bits ...sorry more pictures of food.

Will soon travel to Switzerland for a long weekend break in the mountains, will travel again on the train as it is superb value, (love to know how much one would have to pay in the UK for travelling the equivalent distance !)

I am going to start a brand new website , although I will keep this going, but feel like being a little more adventurous .

Got up nice and early and took a ride on my old Cannondale. It is always a treat except I need to get fit. I had forgotten how hard the saddle is. It is weird what you come across on an early morning bike ride. I was riding around the east harbour in Frankfurt (and by the way I am not a train spotter steam or otherwise) and I came across this. This is fired up sometimes and runs along the Main, with a beer car I believe as well......mmmm nice.

My great accomplice Bubble Black is starting to do stuff with PHP, I wish I was that clever, visit her site here at Subtle Lights. I only recently discovered Daily Planet TV, but I think it is great entertainment and full of interesting stuff , keep it up Lucian !

So now it is hay fever season again, so commiserations to all you other fellow sufferers out there, and to the rest of you , you have no idea what a pain in the $%/§ such a small thing is. Truly an ailment of modern times that seems to be getting more and more widespread every year, I never saw so many people at work complaining. But at least I can walk , think reasonably straight, go to the bathroom without complications, am not oppressed, have my freedom etc etc.

Am taking some days off, and have been able to switch on the computer for the first time in ages, thankfully a new one (Mac Powerbook) I love it. So I only have three not terribly interesting links......but it is better than nothing right ? This is nothing to do with me and seems pretty strange and this is worth looking into, especially if you do not have an ipod !!

Back from other lands

No posts because I have been away to Singapore and Tokyo. Was very busy , but managed to pack a lot in. Was very warm and steamy in Singapore , and was able to see the start of the blossoms in Tokyo. Am still getting over the jet lag, I am useless at coping with that, how people spend their lives on aeroplanes doing that I have no idea. There were big storms here in Frankfurt last night and I saw at least one aeroplane going round again as it approached the airport, glad I was not on that one.

Managed to use the Tokyo subway for the first time on my own , and drank Sake for the first time , and sampled yet more different cuisines in Singapore. Need to go on a diet now.

I managed not mention Fasching yet , but needless to say it came and went. So decide to have lunch out as it was toooo cold to stand and have a load of sweets thrown at us by the carnival floats. It is taken pretty seriously, and is quite surreal as many people are dressed up in totally bizarre costumes for a day or two. I even saw one lady dressed as a toilet....mmmmm. The build up goes on for days with carnival kind of clubs where all the men dress up in weird hats and jackets.........

Well the restaurant where we went to lunch is one we have used for years, and is very modestly priced, and always spotlessly clean. But we had a strange experience that particular day. After sitting down for about five minutes, one of the party asked me to just turn around and look at the wall. I nearly had an heart attack, luckily somw way from our table. There stuck on the wall was an enormous cockroach (or at least that is what it looked like). We all froze but decided not to say a word for the time being. The immaculate waitress carried on taking our order, there is absolutely no way she or her colleagues could not have noticed the offending creature. So it went on, and we still decided to say nothing, perhaps it was a plastic one stuck on by some kids as some carnival jape ? Unfortunately not....... the said creature moved ! Some minutes later an middle aged couple arrived, and were shown to the table right next to where the innocent insect was clung, and proceeded to sit down, with the lady inches from the 'roach. We could not stand the tension, we gobbled up paid the bill and left, the 'roach moving several times prior, still the middle aged couple carried on. Either everyone in the place was blind , staff and customers alike, or no one dare say a thing. Nevertheless, I think it will be a while before we return, I am withholding the name of the establishment in question.
